The Intrepid Air, Sea and Space Museum, built around the Essex Class carrier Intrepid, features an extensive array of exhibits, with the notable addition of the Shuttle Enterprise (a test vehicle which never flew in space) in the summer of 2012. The museum is located at Pier 86 on west side of mid town Mahanttan on the West Side Highway.

Notes on some of the more notable permanent exhibits at the Intrepid Museum.
Intrepid is an Essex-class aircraft carrier, one of four preserved (the others are Hornet, Yorktown, and Lexington.) 23 were completed during WWII with one, Oriskany, completed in 1950 to a revised design. Intrepid was substantially rebuilt several times over the years, which included the addition of an angled flight deck. Intrepid would serve as an attack carrier until 1961, when the ship was reclassified as an anti-submarine carrier. Intrepid would serve as prime recovery ship for a number of early NASA manned space flights, and beginning in 1965, after her final major overhaul, serve in the attack role again off of Vietnam. She was decomissioned in 1974. In 1982, the Intrepid Air, Sea and Space Museum opened with Intrepid as its core.
Growler is a transitional submarine. It was diesel electric powered, one of the last such built for the US Navy, and carried four Regulus cruise missles with nuclear payloads. Growler served from 1958 until 1964, rendered obsolete by the new Polaris SSBNs.
The Concorde was the only super sonic transport design of the 1960s to go into regular service. Twenty were built, operating from 1976 to 2003. A crash (the only crash in the Concorde\'s operational history) in 2000 led to the retirement of the type in 2000.
Enterprise was constructed as the test aircraft for the Space Shuttle program, and flew a number of test flights, including 5 free flights testing the Shuttle\'s behavior as a glider. Although it had been intended to refit Enterprise as an operational shuttle, design changes made to Columbia (the first operational orbiter) were deemed too expensive and Challenger was built instead. Enterprise went on display at the National Air and Space Museum\'s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center instead, before being moved to the Intrepid Museum in the summer of 2012.
The A-12 was the precursor aircraft to the famous SR-71 Blackbird. 13 A-12s were built including a single 2 seat trainer from 1962 to 1964. The A-12s were used in Asia by the CIA from 1967 to 1968, before being replaced by the Air Force\'s SR-71, which was derived from the A-12.
